JONI ON HER NEW SONG, “ORANGE.”

Joni’s new song “Orange” is the perfect addition to your fall soundtrack. It’s wonderful, bright, and filled with nostalgia for the singer's old home of New York City. The now LA based artist has spent the past year working on new music and “Orange” is the first track off her upcoming Orchid Room EP. I got the chance to ask Joni a few questions about the song via email. You can read our interview below.

YOU’VE SPENT THE PAST YEAR WRITING SONGS IN YOUR LAUREL CANYON HOME, HOW DID YOU KNOW THAT IT WAS TIME TO START RELEASING WHAT YOU’VE BEEN WORKING ON?

I really wanted to have a whole body of work before I started releasing singles and these songs just felt really right together. Once I kind of narrowed them down to the 5 I picked for Orchid Room, I knew it was time to start releasing. It was a very long process and some of these songs are years old.

“ORANGE” IS THE FIRST SINGLE OFF YOUR ORCHID ROOM EP, WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO KICK THE PROJECT OFF WITH THAT PARTICULAR SONG?

"Orange" really felt like the end of Summer / start of Fall to me and I thought it would be a good introduction to my world.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE WRITING PROCESS FOR “ORANGE.” WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH YOUR HEAD WHILE YOU WERE MAKING THE SONG?

I initially had a very bouncy verse idea that I was singing over, but then once my producer Chris Petrosino started playing the chorus chord progression and I started singing the “We belong getting lost…” melody, everything kind of fell into place. There was that spark of excitement that only happens when you’re onto something good, and then a mad rush to try to get it all out quickly so we didn’t fuck it up.

DID YOU HAVE A FAVORITE PART OF THE CREATIVE PROCESS FOR “ORANGE?”

I love the writing process and I love the release process. I hate the middle part where there’s a lot of doubt about whether you’ll ever get it right.

I’VE HEARD YOU MENTION THAT THE SONG IS ABOUT NYC. DO YOU OFTEN ASSOCIATE PLACES WITH COLORS?

I don’t usually associate places with color but I am a very visual person so I guess that kind of creeps into my work from time to time. I also have a song called Blueless Bird.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE LYRIC?

Maybe—I’ll be your dying star / I’ll be your wilting flower / Just tell me where you are and I’ll come running back— I thought that really captured the longing of wanting to return to someone or something, and how you’d do anything to get a feeling back.

NOW THAT THE SONG IS OUT, WHAT DO YOU HOPE LISTENERS TAKE AWAY FROM IT?

I don’t really hope for anything in particular, I just love hearing people’s different takes on it.

HOW DOES THE SONG FIT INTO YOUR UPCOMING ORCHID ROOM EP? WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE PROJECT?

All the songs are very different from each other. The main thread is my voice and lyrics but each song has its own identity.
