Opening up with Blake Rose
Twenty Minutes Later went to see Noah Kahan in concert expecting to see a great show, which is exactly what we got. What we didn’t expect was to be blown away by the opening act as well. Blake Rose is a superstar in the making. The singer-songwriter from Perth, Australia shocked us with his stage presence as well as the sheer quality of his music. So obviously, we had to learn more. We got the chance to ask Blake Rose a few questions via email about his current tour. Read our interview below.
YOU'RE CURRENTLY ON THE ROAD WITH NOAH KAHAN, WHAT'S BEEN THE BEST PART OF THE TOUR SO FAR?
The shows are easily my favourite part of tour. It’s super interesting seeing how crowds react to different parts of the set and learning what hypes people up and what doesn’t. It’s been a great experience so far and the reception from all these cities has been amazing so it gives me a lot of confidence. Other than that I also quite like the long drives as I used to do that a lot with my family when I was a kid. It’s very nostalgic for me.
HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO VISIT ANYWHERE YOU'VE NEVER BEEN BEFORE?
Yeah pretty much every city on this tour is somewhere I’ve never been to! The only exception so far is NYC.
WHAT CITY ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO PLAY?
I was most excited for NY and that was amazing. I’m actually super pumped for SLC coz apparently it goes off.
YOU’RE FROM AUSTRALIA—WHAT’S ONE THING YOU MISS FROM HOME THAT YOU CAN'T GET HERE?
Nandos. I was lucky enough to get some in Chicago and DC but it’s super rare to find a Nandos in America.
WHAT'S ONE THING YOU COULDN'T SURVIVE BEING ON TOUR WITHOUT?
Definitely my phone. I usually go for a run before shows if it’s not too cold out and the amount of times I’ve gotten lost and my phone has saved me…
HOW DO YOU KEEP BUSY ON THE ROAD?
I spend a lot of time responding to DMs, comments etc. Usually, after every show, I have a lot of messages and I usually respond to everyone. Aside from that I’ll edit videos and work on music where I can. Or just chill and chat with the lads.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE SONG TO PLAY LIVE?
Probably “Heavy Shit” because we have a drum breakdown in it that gets everyone hyped.
WHAT SONGS HAVE YOU BEEN LISTENING TO ON TOUR?
A lot of random music, no particular artists have been on repeat. A lot of indie/alternative stuff. I started listening to The Technicolors last night and they’re pretty dope.
ANY STAGE MISHAPS/FUNNY MOMENTS ONSTAGE?
There was one show where either myself or someone else had accidentally hit the transpose up button on my keyboard in between soundcheck and the show so when I went to play the synth in rollerblades it was in a completely different key so I had to shut my keyboard off and on to reset it.
CRAZIEST FAN MOMENT / COOLEST PERSON YOU’VE MET ON TOUR?
I had a fan come up to me after the show who’d been following my music for a while and started crying in my arms which was the sweetest thing ever and so crazy for me to see how much my music had impacted someone. She was the best.
WHAT SONG DOES THE CROWD REACT THE MOST TO?
“Heavy Shit” for sure.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE TAKE AWAY FROM SEEING YOU PLAY LIVE?
I hope people leave my set hyped and with a smile on their face. I want to entertain people to the best of my ability and can only hope that’s what they take away from my performance.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED TO DO ONCE THE TOUR ENDS?
I’m very excited to get back into studio mode and finish off these songs that are on the go. Also pumped to hit the slopes. Has been a couple of years since I’ve had the chance to go snowboarding and seeing as I don’t think I’ll be able to get back to Australia for Christmas, I’m definitely gonna do that.
