Keep both eyes on the road and stream “CRASH COURSE” by young friend. The song is the ideal track to play in the car. It’s filled with fast-paced melodies and metaphors and is overall a promising release from the rising artist. Twenty Minutes Later got the chance to ask young friend a few questions about the song via email. Read our interview below.

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN YOU FIRST GOT THE IDEA FOR “CRASH COURSE?”

I was still living at my parent's house and having a pretty regular day. I don’t think it was an idea that came to me right away, I feel like the song started to unfold as I was writing it.

WHAT WERE YOU READING/WRITING/LISTENING TO WHEN YOU WROTE THE SONG?

I was listening to a lot of Jean Dawson and The Neighbourhood at the time. Specifically Pixel Bath and Wiped Out.

HOW LONG DID THE SONG TAKE TO MAKE?

The demo was really built in a day. I started the instrumental in the morning and by the end of the night, I had written and recorded some vocals for it. After that, I sent it to David (marinelli) and he filled in all of the blanks that the original was missing. I wrote the song sometime in October (I think) and we finished it in March. The hook came really quickly, but I definitely took longer to figure out what I had to say with the verses.

HOW DID YOU LAND ON THE TITLE “CRASH COURSE?”

I landed on the title because I feel like the whole song is about learning from something you’ve gone through. The song also has a bunch of lines about driving so it felt fitting.

ANY SILLY STORIES FROM THE MAKING OF THE SONG?

Actually yeah, so while I was recording the vocals, my friend Gabe came over. The voice that you hear at the very end of the song is him, and you can hear him take a sip of his beer.

IF YOU COULD PLACE THE SONG IN ANY MOVIE, WHAT MOVIE WOULD YOU PLACE IT IN?

I feel like the song would work really well in Akira.

IF YOU COULD PLAY THE SONG FOR ANY CELEBRITY, WHO WOULD YOU PLAY IT FOR?

Honestly, I would want to play it for Doja Cat. I feel like she’d enjoy it.

WHERE DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE PLAY THE SONG?

Play it while you’re driving!! But be careful and don’t crash, please.

WHAT PART OF “CRASH COURSE” ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

I’d say I'm most proud of the bridge. I think it captures the essence of the song while still being really simple.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE FANS TAKE AWAY FROM LISTENING?

I hope the takeaway is that you should talk to your friends about what you’re going through. I know it may feel difficult, but if you’re around the right people they’ll be there for you.
