Jill Baylon Talks Latest Song "Crush Phase"
JILL BAYLON ON HER NEW SINGLE “CRUSH PHASE.”
“Crush phase” is the perfect summer song. It’s fun, groovy, and just waiting for you to blast it in the car with your friends (or alone depending on how long social distancing guidelines are in place!!!!!). But as the temperature rises, and you may or may not be catching feelings and finding yourself in your own kind of crush phase, LA based artist Jill Baylon wants you to remind you of your own worth. Her carefully crafted lyrics scream self-love, which is something that everyone could use a little more of these days. Here’s what Baylon has to say about the song.
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR NEW SONG!!! WHAT’S IT ABOUT?
The song is called “Crush Phase.” It comes out May 1st. I feel like it’s something everyone has experienced to some degree. It’s about this phase in the beginning of the relationship, where you don't really know the person yet, so everything they do is perfect and you haven’t really seen their flaws. It’s this crush phase. The song talks about how when you finally do spend more time with the person, you realize that you might have made them up or romanticized them in your head.
WHAT WAS THE WRITING PROCESS LIKE?
I wrote it in January. I think I just sat down one night and wrote it all out. With songs it’s hard. I feel like I have these lulls of time where I’m in between writing and I don’t feel like I have any creative energy. But this song I wrote in 20 minutes, just guitar and vocals from beginning to end.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF THE SONG?
It’s the end of the chorus. The line is, “I don't like anyone more than I like me.” That sounds really narcissistic, but it’s really just talking about the mediocre boys that are hurting my feelings. It's like, “I might as well just hang out with myself because I like myself way better.” I can never sing that part without smiling.
WHAT DO YOU WANT LISTENERS TO TAKE AWAY FROM IT?
I want people to relate to the song, but also to feel empowered by it. I hope listeners can listen to it and recognize their own self worth and be like, “I don’t need person 1, 2, or 3. I’m enough on my own.” So I just hope it makes people happy/feel empowered.
“CRUSH PHASE” IS OUT NOW. YOU CAN FIND IT ON STREAMING SERVICES LIKE SPOTIFY AND APPLE MUSIC. GO LISTEN!!!
