SLUSH PUPPY ON HIS NEW SONG “I DON’T LIKE UR FRIENDS”

Slush Puppy’s latest release “I Don’t Like Ur Friends” serves as the perfect reminder of what a song should be. The song effortlessly transitions between thoughts while detailing the story of a high school relationship—proving that it’s ok for a song to break away from its typical structure. The song's repetition of its title lyric, “I Don’t Like Ur Friends,” will leave you chanting the line over and over again long after the song has ended. I got the chance to talk to Slush Puppy about his newest track and more. You can read our interview below.

I WANTED TO START OFF WITH SOME REALLY BASIC INTRO QUESTIONS. WHEN DID YOU START MAKING MUSIC?

I’ve been playing guitar for a really long time, and I got into producing music in middle school. Some friends taught me how to make lil beats and I just stuck with it.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SOUND?

I try to keep my stuff really fun and easy to listen to. Even if the music is sad lyrically, it always has a good feel to it. I don’t take all of my songs super seriously. I don’t know what would happen if I did. I’m trying to put out more music and just have a good time with it.

WHO ARE SOME ARTISTS YOU’RE LOVING RIGHT NOW/INFLUENCED BY?

I listen to a lot of music that my friends make, like a lot of Kevin Creel, Katsú Oso, Love Leo, and David Hugo. My friend Garrett makes music under the name Postcardboy. His music is super dope. I also really like this guy Huron John. I don’t know him personally, but he is but he is so good. His song “Maple Syrup Tears” is one of my favorite songs. And of course Thomas Headon, who’s featured on the new song.

TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR LATEST RELEASE AND HOW YOU MET THOMAS HEADON.

The song is called “I don’t Like Ur Friends.” I wrote it with my friend Thomas. It’s fun and it has a good vibe to it. Thomas is really good. He has this heavy accent and he’s from Australia, which gives the song a cool sound. We met my sophomore year of high school and have made lots of songs together—just never put them out. But this song came together really quick.

DO MOST OF YOUR SONGS COME TOGETHER QUICK? WHAT IS YOUR WRITING PROCESS LIKE?

I have to be feeling it. I play golf a lot and do a lot of  things that aren’t music to not make me think about it too hard.

“I DON’T LIKE YOUR FRIENDS” DOESN’T FOLLOW YOUR TYPICAL SONG STRUCTURE. WAS THERE A REASON YOU CHOSE TO BREAKAWAY FROM THIS FORMAT?

My structures are weird. I get so anxious if I tell myself that there has to be a verse and a pre and a  chorus. I get so lost. When I write with people, they often expect a certain structure and I like new things going on.

EVEN THOUGH THE SONG VARIES IN FORMAT, IT STILL TELLS A STORY. WHAT IS THAT STORY?

It’s about me and this girl, and she has these really shitty friends that I don’t want her to hang out with. I’d rather just have it be me and her. The chorus is this repetitive “I don’t like your friends.” The song tells a story. It starts with “throw my hoodie on/play my favorite song/its just me alone/cause you’re out with your friends” It’s just me on my own, cause she’s out with her friends. And then at the end of the song it goes “you can throw my hoodie on/ play our favorite song/fuck all your friends/it’s just you and me alone.” It ends with it being just me and her.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE LINE FROM THE SONG?

There’s this part that I wrote, but Thomas sings it. It’s like “they always overdress/dressing to impress/can’t see past pretty girls/because they’re such a mess” He’s talking about being cool. Sometimes a person seems cool, but sometimes they’re messed up or are going through stuff you don’t know about.

DO YOU HAVE A FINAL MESSAGE FOR THE LISTENERS?

Enjoy it. It's a good song to listen to and just vibe.
