Sub*T Talks "Too Soon Too Long"

Sub*T Talks "Too Soon Too Long"

Meet Sub*T: the band that was quite literally formed in a mosh pit. Their latest release “Too Soon Too Long” could not come soon enough. As the world begins to reopen, the song serves as the perfect soundtrack. I got the chance to ask the band a few questions about their latest release. Read our interview below.

HOW DID YOU GUYS FORM SUB*T? WHEN DID YOU FIRST MEET?

GRACE: I’ll take this one because Jade apparently doesn’t remember. We knew of each other through mutual friends, but we first met in person at a concert at Madison Square Garden four years ago. Jade had been having drinks and did not remember meeting me, but that is where we first met.

JADE: It’s weird meeting people through going to shows. You create this huge community and then within that community you start to see who you’re compatible with.  After the show, we started following each other on Instagram. Forming a band was something that we always talked about in passing. Over time, we just got more serious about it. Two years ago, we were in New York and decided that it was really time to do it. That was when we really started writing together.

GRACE YOU’RE BASED IN OAKLAND AND JADE YOU’RE BASED IN NYC. HOW DO YOU GUYS COLLABORATE WHILE BEING SO FAR APART?

GRACE: It’s easier than you’d think. With the internet, it’s so easy for us to record something on our phones or send garage band projects to each other.  We just email things back and forth. Distance was never something that we thought would be a detriment to the band. We were so determined that it was never going to be an issue.

HOW DID “Too Soon Too Long” COME ABOUT?

Grace: We’ve been sitting on the song for a while. It was November 2019 when the song was first written. We had just gone on a trip to California to go see a bunch of shows and Jade mentioned that our hair grows when we’re apart. I just thought that was a very poetic thing to say. I pretty much started writing the song right around then.

WHAT SHOWS WERE YOU SEEING WHEN YOU STARTED WRITING THE SONG?

JADE: Twin Peaks was touring with Post Animal. They’re two of our favorite bands. It was one of those weeks that you wish could last forever. When you have your five best friends in a car for a week, you wish it could last forever—even though you know that it’s going to end. I think Grace perfectly captured that feeling. The sound feels like the perfect soundtrack to one of those weeks.

HOW HAS BEING IN A COMMUNITY OF CONCERT GOERS IMPACTED YOUR MUSIC?

JADE: When you are in that type of community, you evolve together. There’s so much great music out there. Going to so many different shows and experiencing the different kind of crowds really helped us channel what we wanted to be as a band—not in a genre specific kind of way, but in a more general sense.

YOUR INSTAGRAM BIO READS “NOT PUNK.” WHY ARE YOU NOT PUNK?

JADE: Punk has become this trend that so many people are trying to chase, which is so not punk. It’s kind of a play on words because some of our music we make might genuinely sound a little punk at times, but we don’t want to try super hard to fit into that genre. If you’re punk, you don’t need to say it.

GRACE: In the shows that we go to and the music that we love, there’s also a trend of post-punk, which has become another category of super overplayed/indie music instead of punk music. It’s kind of the same thing—people are just following a trend.

JADE: We just want to make music that we love and not try to fit in to a single category.

AS PEOPLE WHO MET AT A CONCERT, I’M ASSUMING THAT PLAYLING LIVE IS SOMETHING THAT IS SUPER IMPORTANT TO YOU GUYS. ARE YOU EXCITED TO PLAY “Too Soon Too Long” LIVE?

JADE: We are so excited. We’ve talked about it for so long.

GRACE: I think we’re more ready than we think to play live. I get self-conscious so easy, but with performing, I feel like I’m extremely ready to do it. I genuinely love our music and I feel like people we love also love our music, which is what I always wanted.

JADE: I feel like when bands are just starting out, they can do so many things in their community. We couldn’t do that this past year, so we are so ready to start supporting bands and playing shows.

IS THERE A PART OF “Too Soon Too Long” YOU GUYS ARE MOST EXCITED ABOUT?

GRACE: When we’re writing songs, we always try to aim for a little bit of a pause and then a pit moment. At the end in the bridge, there’s an opportunity for that.

JADE: It’s perfect for a crowd surf moment.

GRACE: I love the bridge. It’s my favorite part.

YOU GUYS STARTED THIS SONG A LONG TIME AGO. ARE YOU FEELING READY TO RELEASE IT?

GRACE: The song has basically sounded the same since November of 2020. I think it just felt like a weird time to be putting out music with everything that was going on in the world. It’s also perfect timing in that you can now travel places and see your friends without feeling like a bad person. People like us who have a lot of internet friends rely on travel and being able to leave where you are to feel like you have friends. So, I think that it’s a perfect time to release this one.
