Devon Again Turns Negative Feelings into Upbeat Songs
Devon Again is the master of turning negative feelings into upbeat songs. Her latest release, “All My Fault” stemmed from the artist’s realization that she was to blame for her own emotions. While it's tough to hold yourself accountable for your feelings, Devon Again takes control of them in her new single. The song is an anthem, and Twenty Minutes Later got the chance to ask the artist a few questions about her latest release. Read our interview below.
WHERE WERE YOU WHEN YOU FIRST HAD THE IDEA FOR “All My Fault?”
In therapy lol.
HOW LONG DID THE SONG TAKE YOU TO WRITE?
The first day that Jake, Cam, and I spent working on it, I had only written the first two lines and the “All My Fault” hook. The rest of the song was finished really slowly over the following weeks as the production was built out more.
WHAT WAS THE EASIEST PART OF THE SONG TO WRITE? WHAT PART TOOK THE LONGEST?
The first two lines were the first lyrics that popped into my head and kind of shaped the direction of the song. The rest of the song was a little more challenging only because I am picky and annoying and wanted to make sure I was conveying my silly little brain obstacles exactly the way I felt them.
WHAT ARE SOME THINGS YOU DO TO FEEL BETTER WHEN YOU FEEL BAD?
I go on silly little walks around my silly little neighborhood. I eat fruit, call my friends from home, journal, do something cute and creative, make impulsive decisions, write songs, cry, think about what it’d be like to live in someone else's body on a different planet.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT RIGHT NOW? WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO, WATCHING, READING, ETC?
I have been loving Remi Wolf for a good couple of years now. I also am really excited about Teezo Touchdown, Em Beihold, Audrey Nuna, Runo Plum, underscores, Dora Jar, and Chappell Roan. I don’t know, the list is aggressively long. I’m really bad at watching TV or movies, but I did see the most recent Batman and it made me feel like the world was ending.
YOU'RE BASED IN LA. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT LIVING IN LOS ANGELES?
Now that I’ve lived in LA for half a second it feels like I have finally found home here. My favorite part is definitely my friends and colleagues. I have been lucky enough to meet lovely and amazing people. I also really love how many musicians and creatives are in LA and know I wouldn't be able to meet as many people on the same journey as I am in most other places.
WHAT’S YOUR LEAST FAVORITE PART ABOUT LIVING IN LA?
Living in LA.
DID YOU COLLABORATE WITH ANYONE ON THIS TRACK?
Yes, this song is produced and co-written by Cameron Hale and Jake Weinberg.
IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY ARTIST FEATURE ON THE SONG, WHO WOULD YOU WANT TO FEATURE?
Ben Platt.
IF YOU COULD PLACE THE SONG IN ANY MOVIE, WHAT MOVIE WOULD YOU PLACE IT IN?
I’m horrible at knowing movies, but I think it would be really cool in a coming-of-age movie moment or maybe Shrek.
IF YOU COULD PLAY THE SONG FOR ANY CELEBRITY, WHO WOULD YOU PLAY IT FOR AND WHY?
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson because I want him to put it on his workout playlist.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF ABOUT THE SONG?
Absolutely without a doubt the bridge of the song. Cameron and I spent so long picking apart this section and I love the way it turned out. I’m really proud of this song overall, I think the way it grows is so special and I am just so happy it's out.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOU OR YOUR MUSIC?
